Lotus — one name, several very different flowers

Lotus is one of the most misunderstood materials in natural perfumery. Blue Lotus, White Lotus, and Pink Lotus can smell completely different, yet they are often expected to be the same.

The material

Why Lotus causes so much confusion

Many people expect lotus to smell like a soft watery floral, but that depends entirely on which lotus is being used. What gets described online as simply “lotus” is often only one type, while Blue, White, and Pink Lotus each have their own distinct character.

In perfumery, lotus is not one fixed scent. It can be deep and atmospheric, light and watery, or creamy and soft, depending on the flower and extraction.

Floral Watery Green Creamy Atmospheric

If one lotus smells very different from another, that does not mean one is wrong. They are often entirely different floral materials under the same broad name.

The variations

Blue Lotus, White Lotus, and Pink Lotus

These materials may all be called lotus, but they do not smell alike. Each one brings a different mood to a blend.

Blue Lotus

Richer, deeper, and more atmospheric. Often fruity, slightly resinous, and tea-like, with a fuller body and a more mystical character.

White Lotus

Softer, fresher, and more delicate. Often cleaner and more watery, with a gentle floral lift and a lighter feel.

Pink Lotus

Creamy, floral, and softly sweet. Often sitting between the other two — richer than White Lotus but gentler than Blue.

This is why colour matters with lotus. It is not just a visual distinction — it helps identify the scent profile you are actually choosing.

How they feel in perfumery

Three different floral moods

Lotus materials can shift a composition in very different directions. Blue Lotus adds depth and atmosphere, White Lotus brings airy freshness, and Pink Lotus gives softness and floral creaminess.

  • Blue Lotus: deeper, richer, more atmospheric
  • White Lotus: fresher, lighter, more watery
  • Pink Lotus: softer, creamier, more rounded

Choosing the right one

Which lotus should I choose?

Choose Blue Lotus if: you want depth, richness, and a more atmospheric floral note.

Choose White Lotus if: you want something lighter, fresher, and more delicate.

Choose Pink Lotus if: you want a softer floral with gentle sweetness and a creamy heart.

At Gabriella Oils, lotus is selected by character rather than by one fixed idea of how “lotus” should smell. Each colour offers a different expression of the flower.

Natural materials are rarely just one thing

Different species, colours, plant parts, and processing styles can all change how an oil smells and behaves. This library is here to make those differences easier to understand.
