History
Benzoin resin has been prized for well over a thousand years throughout Southeast Asia, where trees of the Styrax genus naturally produce the fragrant resin after the bark is carefully tapped. Once hardened, the resin became a valuable trading commodity, travelling along ancient spice routes into the Middle East and Europe.
For centuries, benzoin was burned as incense in temples and places of worship, while perfumers discovered its remarkable ability to soften and preserve delicate floral fragrances. Its naturally sweet, vanilla-like aroma made it a favourite ingredient in balms, ointments and traditional perfumes long before the development of modern fragrance materials.
Today, benzoin remains one of the most respected natural resins in perfumery. Its warm balsamic character and exceptional fixative properties continue to make it an essential ingredient for artisan perfumers creating elegant floral, oriental and woody compositions.
