Ginseng Essential Oil

History

Ginseng, Panax ginseng, has been one of the most highly valued plants in East Asian traditions for thousands of years. Native to the cool forests of northern China and Korea, the plant is recognised by its slow-growing roots, which can take many years to reach maturity.

The name Panax comes from the Greek word meaning “all-healing,” reflecting the high regard the root held in early botanical traditions. Historical records from China describe ginseng being gathered from mountain forests and traded as a rare and precious natural material.

Wild ginseng roots were especially prized because of their rarity and distinctive human-like shape. In earlier centuries they were sometimes valued as highly as precious metals and were reserved for imperial courts, scholars, and traditional herbal practitioners.

Over time, ginseng became one of the most recognised botanical ingredients in East Asian herbal culture. Today it continues to be appreciated worldwide for its distinctive earthy aroma and its long association with traditional plant knowledge and history.
