Myrrh Essential Oil

Myrrh Essential Oil
(Commiphora myrrha (T.Nees) Engl.

Steam-distilled from naturally exuded resin harvested in Ethiopia, this Myrrh Essential Oil carries a quiet depth shaped by arid landscapes, ancient trade routes, and centuries of ceremonial use. Warm, resinous, and grounding, it invites stillness and reflection.

Myrrh Essential Oil is distilled from the aromatic resin of Commiphora myrrha, a small, thorny tree native to the dry regions of East Africa. For thousands of years, myrrh has been valued across cultures for its scent, symbolism, and use in ritual, medicine, and perfumery.

The resin is carefully collected once it has naturally hardened on the bark, then gently steam distilled to release its complex aromatic profile. This traditional method preserves the oil’s depth and integrity, resulting in a rich, concentrated essential oil with remarkable staying power.

The aroma is deep and balsamic, opening with earthy warmth and unfolding into soft, smoky, slightly sweet notes with a resinous dryness beneath. Grounding and contemplative, myrrh has a calming presence that feels both protective and centring.

At Gabriella Oils, Myrrh Essential Oil is chosen for natural perfumery, grounding aromatherapy blends, and ritual use where depth, stillness, and emotional steadiness are desired. It anchors lighter notes, enhances resins and woods, and lends quiet gravity to slow, intentional formulations.

This is a 100% pure steam-distilled essential oil with no synthetic fragrance, fillers, or additives. For external use only. Always dilute before skin application. As with all natural resins, aroma and appearance may vary slightly between batches.

Historical & Traditional Uses

Myrrh is a natural aromatic resin obtained from small desert trees of the genus Commiphora, which grow across the dry landscapes of northeast Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. For centuries the resin has been collected by making small cuts in the bark, allowing fragrant sap to slowly dry into reddish-brown resin tears.

In antiquity, myrrh was one of the most important aromatic materials traded along the famous Incense Routes that connected southern Arabia, East Africa, and the Mediterranean world. Caravans transported resins such as myrrh and frankincense across deserts to markets in Egypt, Greece, and Rome, where they were valued as luxury perfume ingredients.

The resin was commonly used in incense blends, scented oils, and early perfume preparations. Its deep, warm aroma made it a popular base note in ancient fragrance formulas and ceremonial incense mixtures.

Today, myrrh remains appreciated in traditional incense, natural perfumery, and aromatic preparations for its rich resinous scent and its long association with historic fragrance traditions.
