History

Costus root comes from the Himalayan plant Saussurea costus, a tall thistle-like herb native to the mountain regions of Kashmir and northern India. The aromatic roots have been valued for centuries and were historically dried, traded, and distilled for their distinctive earthy fragrance.

In the ancient world, costus was a highly prized ingredient in perfumery and incense. It was traded along the historic spice routes from India to the Middle East and the Mediterranean, where it was used in scented oils, temple incense, and luxury perfumes. Costus root was a valued ingredient in early incense blends and was sometimes combined with aromatics such as spikenard and resins like myrrh.

References to costus appear in early texts and historical perfume traditions, including the biblical Book of Ezekiel (27:19), where it is mentioned as a valuable traded aromatic. Because of its strong, grounding aroma, the root was often blended with resins, woods, and other botanical ingredients in traditional incense preparations.

Today, costus root remains appreciated by perfumers and incense makers for its deep, earthy character and its connection to ancient fragrance traditions.
